What is post tensioned concrete?

Post tensioned concrete is reinforced with steel cables or bars called tendons that are pulled and secured after, or ‘post,’ pouring of the concrete.

In some cases, post-tensioned slabs and beams are also ‘draped,’ meaning the tendons sag at the midpoint during installation and are then tensioned after the concrete is placed, achieving the highest tension possible on the cable. We often do post-tensioning in construction of high-rise buildings and car dealerships with large, open showrooms.

What are the benefits of post-tensioning?

Post-tensioning permits the construction of large open spaces in concrete structures and also permits slabs with a thinner profile. By eliminating interior supports and making suspended slabs lighter, you need less concrete, and the structure weighs less when complete.

Another benefit of this technique is that concrete forms can be taken down sooner, allowing for faster construction and completion of the project.

What is post tension repair and modification?

Post-tension repair and modification are a specialty at our company. Our highly skilled crews are trained and equipped to repair and replace post tension tendons in existing buildings.

Our crews can also do modifications on existing structures to inspect and re-purpose post-tensioned beams, slabs, and other concreat structures for building enlargements or repair.

What is barrier cable?

Barrier CablesBarrier cable is the name for a variety of special steel cables used for guardrails in open concrete structures like parking garages, outdoor walkways, and rooftop use areas. This wire is usually galvanized, making it rust-resistant and suitable for exposure to the elements.

In barrier cable construction, heavy-duty anchors are set into pillars or walls and then connected to thick wire strands. Eight or more wires are placed about 6-inches apart to create a safe railing between the columns. In a barrier cable system in a parking garage, multiple wire cables span horizontally between the concrete posts where they anchor securely.

If a person or vehicle hits the cables, the wires go into tension and resist the impact, preventing a catastrophic fall accident. Barrier cables also have the advantage of allowing plenty of sunlight and visibility into the interior of the parking structure.

Can you design and install barrier cables?

Yes, we are a full-service barrier cable contractor. We can design, supply, and install cable guardrails in your new or existing structure.

Can you repair existing barrier cables?

Yes. Older cables become rusted and corroded, especially if they were not galvanized or coated for protection. We can replace rusted and broken cables using galvanized steel with or without a plastic or epoxy coating.

Our barrier cable services and installations meet the International Building Codes (IBC) and Post-Tension Institute (PTI) requirements for this type of railing, including IBC Vehicular Impact Code coverage.

What is 'form and pump' repair?

Form and pump repair is a technique for filling large gaps in concrete structures, using specialized concrete forms and high-pressure pumps to install liquid repair materials deep inside the crevices.

We use a variety of aggregate repair materials for this type of work, depending on the situation, and we have several types of pumps for injecting the materials.

When doing this work, it is vital to make sure no air pockets are trapped inside the injected repair material, or the repair job won’t last. By strategically placing specialized air vent tubes into the existing concrete, we can make sure no air gets trapped.

What is carbon fiber strengthening?

Another method for fixing cracks in concrete is with the use of carbon fibers. Using this material can save you from needing to tear out and replace an existing structure. Carbon fiber also fixes cracks in a way that prevents them from reappearing.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is widely used in the concrete repair industry. It is lightweight with tremendous tensile strength, meaning it resists forces that try to pull it apart.

CFRP adds significantly less weight to repairs than many other materials, and applying adds little weight to the load on the building’s foundation.

What is jacketing?

Jacketing is a method for strengthening existing concrete beams and columns by adding a thick layer or ‘jacket’ of steel, concrete, or other materials to the structure’s exterior.

FRP jacketing refers to Fiber Reinforced Polymer jacketing material with exceptional sheer strength.

How is epoxy injection used for fixing concrete?

Epoxy injection is another technique for fixing cracks in walls, columns, piers, and slabs. Special types of two-part epoxy glues are injected deep into the problem area to seal it off and restore a smooth and strong surface.

What is LCR, and when do you use it?

LCR is Liquid Concrete Repair, a two-part epoxy used for repairing smaller cracks in slabs, beams, and walls.

An epoxy is a high-strength form of plastic made from two components called resin and hardener. When mixed, the resin and hardener become exceptionally strong and durable and bond with a high strength to clean surfaces.

LCR repair materials come in cartridges that fit into a caulk gun for applying the product.

What is rebar?

Rebar is steel bar with a rough surface made especially for embedding in concrete to strengthen it. Rebar adds tremendous strength to concrete structures. However, rebar is not the same as post-tensioned tendons because it is often not put under additional tensioning after the concrete is in place.

What are slab-on-grade post tension repairs?

Many existing slabs contain post tension cables that are rusted, broken, or otherwise damaged. We drill into the slab to find these cables and then extract them and install new ones. The new cables are tensioned and secured to walls or beams using specialized hardware.

Slab-on-grade post-tension repairs renew the strength and integrity of a slab without having to demolish and rebuild it.

Doing post tension repairs on a slab can save a considerable amount of money compared to tearing out and re-pouring a new floor.

What other types of concrete repair do you do?

We can fix spalling of concrete surfaces caused by freezing and thawing, resurfacing of concrete surfaces, repair of uneven surfaces, repair of pitting and scaling caused by de-icing compounds, and repair of surface cracking in all types of concrete construction.

Do you work on high-rise buildings or industrial projects?

Yes, we do concrete strengthening work on commercial and industrial projects, including high-rise buildings.

We also work on concrete strengthening projects in residential homes, apartment buildings, and other types of businesses, including parking garages.

Can you enlarge existing concrete structures?

Strengthening structures for enlargement is one of our many services.

Many of our clients have existing buildings, and they want to add floors or otherwise enlarge the space. We can increase the strength of foundation beams and other structural members to allow for this type of expansion.

In many cases, enlargement involves adding extra layers of concreat to existing foundations and other weight-bearing members to allow them to take the additional weight of the expansion.

Surface preparation of existing concreat is one of the keys for successfully strengthening beams, columns, and slabs. Air-tight formwork and making sure there are no voids in the new work are also essential.

Are concrete and cement the same thing?

No. Cement is the hardening agent ingredient in concrete, along with sand and aggregate rock. Cement becomes hard and durable when mixed with water, and it is what causes concrete to harden.
